The development of batteries for the e-mobility continuously creates new challenges for the researchers. To improve performance of lithium ion batteries, different approaches might be considered. Therefore the Institute of Joining and Welding (ifs) focuses its research on the development of alternative binders for the active materials. Disadvantages of binder originally used are the high price, the harmful solvent, which makes a complex process technology necessary, the low adhesion on the electrode substrate and the low elasticity, which causes delamination and crack formation. The avoidance of solvents, the improvement of adhesion as well as of elasticity is possible by the application of suitable adhesives. Principal advantages of the adhesives are excellent adhesion to different substrates. However, epoxy resins in particular showed a good performance and were investigated in more detail. Aspects like miscibility, curing, elasticity, adhesion, porosity and conductivity must be considered by the development of a new binder system. To characterize the optimized properties of epoxy resin, several analytical methods have been used. The results of the present study pointed out that the use of epoxy resins is beneficial in terms of their properties and the simplified process technology via using PVdF.
