Copper nanowires on Recycled Conducting Glass for DSSC Electrodes

A simple method for recovery of ITO glass from thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) wastes for dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) electrodes has been developed. The ITO glass separated from the color filter and TFT array glass substrate were sandwiched with two parallel aluminum plates moved in opposite directions in the ethanol solution assisted with supersonic vibration was recovered. The recovered ITO glass has optical transmission of about 70% with the resistivity of 100 ohm approximately. To enhance the conductivity of electrodes with recovered ITO glass for DSSC electrodes, controllable Cu@C core shell nanoparticles (prepared by carbonization of Cu2+– β-cyclodextrin at 573 K) were used to construct copper nanowires on recovered ITO glass by screen printing and steam reforming. The efficiency of the DSSC utilizing copper nanowires on electrodes (Fig. 1) is generally greater than 2%. Notably, by the use of the recovered ITO glass in assembling DSSCs the total cost may be reduced by 60%..
