Detailed Technology Summary: Transformational is using intimate properties of smart materials for high voltage generation by designing simple compact device. Device can generate DC and pulsed high voltage without any electronics with versatile power supplies (sun-light, laser, heat/cold, mechanical stress). Pulsed mode of high-voltage generation can be controlled or can be done in self-pulsing regime. Pulsed mode can be remotely activated by pulsed laser or modulated sunlight. Self-pulsing mode may transform CW laser light or CW incoherent illumination (as sunlight) into short ( msec-microsecond) high-voltage pulses. Placed in modest vacuum this power supply can be used as compact crystal accelerator Unique property of using this crystal accelerator as electron beam source is generation of self-focused electron beam without additional beam-control elements. Early version of this technology already reached a market as compact and safe hand-held electron beam and X-ray source, powered by a small 9V battery. Scaling of brightness of electron beam and X-ray generation is possible combining already developed elements with minor modification. Additional potential application is predicted for the efficient concentrated solar power conversion to electricity, using novel photo-galvanic effect (called also bulk photovoltaic effect, gigantic photovoltaic effect). To improve remote monitoring of electrical pulses we work on adding of compact liquid-crystal droplet based sensor. This sensor will allow to solve challenging problem of detecting both voltage and current pulses simultaneously as they have different time scale (seconds for voltage and microseconds for currents). Compact, safe and cheap high-voltage source can be used in material science, radiation physics, space industry, medicine, food industry, and education. Value Proposition for Industry: This is cheap and safe environmentally friendly method for high voltage generation with simple compact device.
