Keywords:

Carbon nano and alumina nano materials are two key constituents used for water purification. Each serves a different purpose in the water purification process. The carbon nano material treated with dilute acid removes the bacteria, microbes, heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury and any traces of hydrocarbon, standard pesticides in water which are not safe for drinking. The alumina nano material with metalized ions is used for removing fluoride and arsenic. The source for carbon nano material is activated carbon which has been used in water purification over the years. Activated alumina is used for a wide range of adsorbent and catalyst applications including the adsorption of catalysts in polyethylene production, in hydrogen peroxide production, as a selective adsorbent for many chemicals including arsenic, fluoride and sulfur. In many parts of India, there is enough fluoride in the water to cause fluorosis. The amount of fluoride leached from the water being filtered depends on how long the water is actually touching the alumina filter media.
