Gears, Bearings, Springs, Beams etc. are some of the commonly used machine elements used build machines and mechanical systems. Carbon nanotube can be used as these machine tool elements when building nano-machines or nanomechanical systems (NEMS). In this paper we review and do a critical assessment of past work done on use of carbon nanotube as machine elements. The suitability, advantages and limitation of carbon naotube for each category of machine elements is discussed. The paper has contribution also in terms of future directions of research in building nano-machines and nanomecahnical systems using carbon nanotube based machine elements. Geometric modeling and motion modeling is key to success of any machine elements. These requirements are very different at meso and nano levels. The geometric and motion modeling issues at nano level has been discussed discussed with particular reference to design and realization of such elements. Modeling and simulation tools needed for design and manufacturing of nano-level machine elements are also discussed.
