In this work, we investigate the synthesis of single crystalline rutile TiO2 nanorods for photoelectrochemical water splitting. A facile and convenient hydrothermal method was used to fabricate it. We realize the control of the length, diameter and density of the nanorods on transparent conductive fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates by varing the growth parameters. Besides, we decorated the nanorods with Au nanoparticles to improve the catalytic activity. Under the illumination from solar simulator, the Au nanoparticles decorated TiO2 nanorods film produces a photocurrent density of 0.56 mA/cm2 at 0.8V versus the reference electrode.
