Due to emergence of antibiotic and multi-drug resistant infectious agents, there is a growing need for development of novel and effective antimicrobial therapeutics and devices. Innovative anti-infective treatment modalities, particularly for multi-drug resistant infections and their resilient biofilms is urgently needed. Our team has developed a novel device for creating Non-Thermal Cold Plasma. Although there are a number of technologies generating cold plasma, our technology is novel due to its size, reduced cost, being portable with no requirement for any noble gas, its precision, and ease of application. We evaluated the efficacy of this technology against bacterial and fungal pathogens including drug resistant strains. The planktonic and biofilm antimicrobial testing demonstrated efficacy against bacterial and fungal agents including S. aureus (MRSA), P. aeruginosa, E. Coli, E. faecium, Candida albicans. T. rubrum and T. metagrophyte. This handheld cold Plasma technology has significant potential as a countermeasure against multidrug resistant and hard-to-treat infectious agents in hospitals, battlefield, and resource limited areas.
