AxNano developed a novel method for producing robust, high-volume, cost-effective carbon fibers in support of next-generation materials for structural composites. AxNano has developed a high-throughput advanced process to form bundles of nano-fibers making nanofiber yarns. The process is designed to achieve greater structural perfection needed for leaps in mechanical strength and stability of carbon fibers. This innovative research program establishes a prototype advanced manufacturing process, controlled at the nano/molecular scale in a continuous fashion. This project supports future innovative nanomaterial based polymeric composites with have the potential to supplant conventional carbon fiber reinforced polymeric (CFRP) composites with applications in commercial space travel, air travel/cargo, and passenger vehicles/ground shipping industries . Specifically the project addresses fundamental challenges in mass-manufacturing continuous and high-strength carbon nanofiber yarns, weaves and next-generation carbon nanofiber yarn-reinforced polymeric composites (CNFYRP).
