As a draw solution, 2-butoxyethanol (2BE) was examined for forward osmotic application such as power generation and desalination. As forward osmosis experiments, simple hand made cell with a membrane of 5mm in diameter. Under stirring at 7000 rpm, 2BE induced a water flux of 0.02 m/h, 1.2-fold that of 3.5wt% salt water in the initial 5 min, and the osmolality of 40wt% of 2BE aqueous solution was 2 times higher than that of 3.5wt% salt water in freezing point depression measurement.
