Block copolymers with hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments can assemble to generate a variety of nano-scale structures. Additionally, block copolymers have tremendous potential to improve the performance of commercial products in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, adhesives and detergents industries. Block copolymer synthesis, however, is challenging and requires careful study and optimization of various polymerization techniques and post-polymerization modifications. This approach utilizes styrene or hydrophobic methacrylates as the components of the hydrophobic segments and glycidyl (meth)acrylate as a reactive block. The epoxide groups of the glycidyl block were reacted with nucleophiles to yield various hydrophilic segments. Here we describe the synthesis of “universal” block copolymer precursors and the conversion of those precursors to block copolymers to non-ionic, cationic, and anionic surfactants by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP).
