Due to their unique “switchable” properties, stimuli-responsive polymers have been attracting considerable attention in biotechnologies and successful applications have already been demonstrated in sensing, intelligent textiles, bio-separation and drug delivery systems. Development of responsive surfaces is a topic of intensive research at CSEM and our presentation will aim at giving real-case of industrial applications of smart coatings, and in particular, to show their possible integration into bioMEMS devices. In this context, we will successively present the use of stimuli-responsive block copolymer micelles as a tool for nanofabrication, some processes for preparation of nanoporous membranes and their functionalization with thermo-responsive polymers, the use of “smart” hydrogels as part of biosensors for health monitoring and finally the design of micro-patterned responsive surfaces for reversible capture/release of cells.
