Mechanical property, UV resistance, and oxygen permeation performance of automobile polyurethane (PU) coating containing NCO-functionalized (MWCNTs and nanoclays) have been measured. A novel method was used to functionalize CNTs and nanoclays using a diisocyanate in which the two end NCO groups have different reactivities. NCO-functionalized nanoparticles form covalent bonds with, and are imbedded in, the matrix, while unfunctionalized ones remain loosely on matrix surface. Tensile moduli of composites containing NCO-functionalized nanopartciles are much higher than those without or with unmodified nanoparticles. The photodegradation and oxygen permeation of composites containing CNTs was greatly reduced. The results indicated that NCO-functionalized (MWCNTs and nanoclays) can be used to greatly many fucntional properties of PU coatings.
