Presented is a method for carrying out rapid single cell gene expression analyses on a large number of cells in parallel. The entire analysis is carried out on a DNA microarray. We demonstrate single molecule resolution without the use of PCR, allowing us to quantitatively analyse high as well as low levels of gene expression. Because of the parallel nature of the method, individual cells within a population can be compared rapidly and conveniently.
