There has been intense interest in polymeric nanocomposites using nanoparticles, nanowires, and nanotubes, because nanocomposites possess improved physical properties versus the unmodified polymer. In particular, a mixture of polymers and nanoparticles can form flexible nanocomposites that exhibit advantageous electrical, optical, or mechanical properties. In this work, for the first time, we suggest that polymeric nanofibers containing ferritin, which are known as multifunctional biomolecular nanoparticles, can have superparamagnetic properties at room temperature due to the ferritin incorporated in their polymeric matrix. In previous work, we have elucidated that ferritin can play a significant role as a nanomaterial to reinforce a PVA matrix due to chemical bonds formed between a ferritin shell and the PVA. Therefore, PVA/ferritin hybrid nanofibers can be used as multifunctional nanofibers for polymeric artificial muscles because of their superparamagnetic properties.
