The design, manufacture and use of quantum dots and gold nanoparticles for detection and prevention of the onset of malignant tumor formation is presented. Gold nanoparticles and quantum dots are finding increasing application as bio-chemical sensors for mitigating the onset of tumor-associated antigens (proteins) that otherwise would lead to formation of malignant cells due to their unique optical properties and bio-functionality. By drug-loading and encapsulating the nanoparticles with an antibody for Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EFGR) proteins, detection is enhanced. It is also envisioned that these nanoparticles can be engineered to carry specific drugs. They can then be able to be delivered to specific malignant tumors as effectively as they carry the imaging materials that detect the growth of cancer.
