Alba-Technic, LLC and the University of Maine are developing an automated small batch manufacturing system that streamlines both the customization and manufacture of a protective headgear designed for aesthetic appeal and comfort by using advanced materials and customized manufacturing techniques while ensuring a functional and desirable design. Two major issues to commercialization are being resolved; the need for custom fit for efficacy and comfort, and automation of the manufacturing process. Falls are the leading cause of head injury in older adults and deaths from head injuries from falls spike after the age of 84 years. Unattractive fall protection helmets are stigmatizing, contributing to poor adherence even if prescribed.Use of an advanced material system resulting in a thinner more aesthetic design and is comfortable could become the primary prevention approach for older adults. This effort has been funded by the National Institutes SBIR Phase I/II and NSF STTR Phase I.
