Current solar photovoltaic (PV) systems for residential homes have several drawbacks. Grid tied PV systems with energy storage are very expensive, whereas grid tied PV systems without energy storage may cause unstable and unpredictable power flow from the consumer to the utility because of solar power fluctuations due to weather variations. Moreover, PV systems without energy storage cannot operate during a power outage to prevent islanding. The intelligent energy management and power distribution panel (IEMPDP) discussed here addresses these problems with a holistic, bottom up approach. By automating the key component of local electric distribution system, the IEMPDP will work as an intelligent gateway to the power grid, local power distribution systems, and the energy management center. It can automatically control local energy storage and consumption, dynamically distribute power, and intelligently connect to the power grid. With integrated and comprehensive monitor and control, it will enable local grid tied PV system to provide more stable and predictable power, allow consumers to more efficiently use energy, and help utility power grids to be more robust and reliable.
